** Community Arts Grants for Livingston County Programs **
Genesee Valley Council on the Arts receives money from the New York State Council on the Arts to fund local arts and cultural programs in the county. Any non-profit group or branch of local government is eligible to apply for up to three projects and may request a total of $5,000. Some projects in recent years include: a children’s literary festival, music concerts at village parks and churches, painting workshops, library programs, printing a historical photo negative collection, and production assistance for local theatre groups and a community steel drum band. The application is short and simple to write and we are here to help. Applications are available in July and grant writing workshops will be held during the summer months. Before applying, applicants must consult with GVCA’s Program Coordinator. Attendance at GVCA’s grant writing seminar or an individual meeting will be required. First-time applicants are encouraged to contact the Program Coordinator early in the process. The application deadline is the first Monday in October.

For more information, select the above link or contact Chris Norton, 585/243-6785 or chris@gvcaonline.org.
** The Dick Smith Young Artists Grants for high school students residing in Livingston County **
The Dick Smith Young Artists Grant program is for high school juniors and seniors who are serious about developing their artistic talents. Any junior or senior who resides in Livingston County is eligible to apply for up to $500 to pursue a special extra-curricular opportunity in his or her artistic discipline. A panel of artists and art teachers selects the awardees. The Genesee Valley Council on the Arts awards grants twice a year for opportunities in creative writing, dance, music, theatre, or visual arts (including film, video and computer art). Selection criteria are: a) artistic excellence of the student's work, b) artistic quality of the opportunity, c) student's preparation in the discipline, and d) good academic standing. There are no need based awards. Since June 1998, GVCA has awarded grants to young artists from all over Livingston County. These grants have enabled them to take advantage of artistic opportunities at SUNY Geneseo, SUNY Fredonia, Eastman School of Music, Hochstein Music School, New York State Summer School of the Arts, Writers & Books, Visual Studies Workshop, Alfred University, the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Syracuse University, RIT, Nazareth College, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Grants are awarded twice annually. Deadlines are 4:30PM on the third Wednesday in May for the July-December funding period and the third Wednesday in November for the January-June funding period. Select the above link for applications and more information or contact the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts: 585/243-6785, chris@gvcaonline.org
** Individual Artists Grants for Livingston County **
A grant of $2,000 is available to artists interested in creating new work within a community context. These competitive grants, given by Genesee Valley Council on the Arts, are based on the artistic merit of work samples, a strong interface between the community and the creative process, and a clearly defined project. They were created by the New York State Council on the Arts to further meet the needs of artists in our state. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, have resided in Livingston County for at least six months before the application deadline, and not be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program. They must attend a Community Arts Grant seminar or consult with the program coordinator before applying. The application deadline is the third Monday in October..

** Artists in the Schools Grant **
This program is available to public, private, and home school groups that have not-for-profit status in Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming Counties and Wayland-Cohocton Central School. It funds artists to work with teachers integrating the arts into the core curriculum. They must work for at least five days (three days for first-time applicant) with a core group of students. The core group may be a grade level or subject area, but every student should have at least five meetings (three meetings for first-time applicant) with the artist in a small group.

Genesee Valley Council on the Arts has funded projects that have explored the Erie Canal through regional music, Greek mythology and theatre through drama, anatomy through drawing and painting, creative writing through storytelling, and African culture through African drumming.

Successful applicants can receive up to $1,500 toward the cost of the residency. Fifty percent of the total cost of the residency project comes from the school in a combination of in-kind and cash contributions. For schools having received a previous grant, the cash contribution must be equal to at least 10% of the total grant request. Applications must be postmarked by the last Wednesday in June; specific dates are noted on the application form. Applicants must consult with the GVCA program coordinator before applying. For more information, select the above link or contact Chris Norton, 585/243-6785 or chris@gvcaonline.org.

Call for Docents
The Genesee Valley Council on the Arts is recruiting volunteers interested in serving as docents in the New Deal Gallery at Livingston Arts Center in Mount Morris. The gallery, opening in December, will feature the county’s collection of 239 Great Depression-era paintings. This is one of the largest collections of WPA/Federal Art Project oil paintings in a non-federal facility. It continues to be one of the few collections of its type to remain relatively intact. Docents will interact with gallery visitors and serve as a source for additional information about the artwork, time period, and Murray Hill. Volunteers should be willing to contribute a few hours each month to the gallery. Training will be provided. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact 585-243-6785 or mail@gvcaonline.org.
Artists & Audiences Exchange through New York Foundation for the Arts
Artists & Audiences Exchange (A&AE) is a NYFA public program that brings high quality multidisciplinary arts programming into local communities throughout New York State.

The A&AE program provides recipients of the NYFA Artists’ Fellowship Awards with opportunities to design free public arts projects with non-profit organizations across New York state. NYFA Fellows partner with community-based organizations to make the contemporary arts available to a broad audience. All A&AE public service events are free of charge and open to the public.

A&AE fosters over 100 exchanges each year, from poetry readings in an urban community garden and a visual arts workshop for women with cancer, to a choreographer’s mini-residency at a state university. By reaching new audiences, A&AE expands the cultural dialogue between the public and contemporary artists and their work.

Through the Artists & Audiences Exchange program, NYFA Fellows and A&AE Sponsoring Organizations have joined together to create a wide range of dynamic projects and presentations.

If your non-profit organization is interested in finding out more about becoming a Sponsoring Organization for A&AE, click the above link for details and recent project examples.

We are a new 501(c)(3) not-for-profit created to promote social and economic change through instructing the underserved population to create saleable art and crafts. Finger Lakes Trading Cooperative offers support for small businesses
The Finger Lakes Trading Cooperative program, that serves Wyoming and Livingston County, is looking for rural business owners that would like assistance entering the world of e-commerce. The program provides the loan of a Kodak Digital Camera and a laptop computer for nine months, if needed, and for qualified participants, loans up to $25,000 for startup and expansion. Opportunities to network with other business owners and technical assistance and training are also available. Senator Clinton started this program with the assistance of Rural Opportunities, Inc. The idea was to expand the market for rural artists. Local artisans can take advantage of this unique opportunity to expand their market with a 24/7 storefront. Your business can access previously inaccessible markets using the Internet as a resource to upcoming generations that accept technology and telecommunication as a given. Small businesses with fewer than ten employees benefit the most from being on-line, 35% gain 10 to 99 percent of current sales directly or indirectly from the Internet. On average, Web users are upscale (25% have income over $80K), professional (50% are professional or managerial) and educated (64% have at least a college degree). Approximately 14% (2.5 million) of Web users have purchased products or services over the Internet. Are you tired of participating in craft sales? Do you need to find a market that will appreciate your talent? Is your business ready to expand your market using e-commerce and the Internet? Call Kathleen English, Program Coordinator at 585-245-5754 today and learn how the Finger Lakes Trading Cooperative can help grow your business. Learn more at: www.map4success.org
