In 2011, Afterimage: the Journal of Media Arts and Cultural Criticism, a publication of VSW, featured a special issue that inspired the series. The program brings together national and international journalists, a panel of scholars and an artist from universities in Western, New York, and a family of refugees now based in the Rochester area that survived the atrocities of a tribal massacre in Gatumba, Burundi, Africa in 2004. The full schedule and descriptions of events are below. This series is free and open to the public thanks in part to grant support from the New York Council for the Humanities. Free. VISUAL ART April 5 or 7 Cloisonné April 5, 5:30-8:00 pm or April 7, 10:00 am-12:30 pm, Thursday or Saturday. Location: Livingston Arts Center, 4 Murray Hill Dr., Mt. Morris.
Take a simple shape and add your own lines of silver wire to create something beautiful. In this class we will use an enameling process called Cloisonné (French for "cloisonné" or "cell"), a technique in which metal wires are bent to form a design; granulars of colored ground glass enamel are inlaid into them, resulting in "cloisons," and are then fired to set the cells in the base enamel. The Byzantine Empire, 6th centuray AD, was the setting for gold cloisonné pieces of a religious nature. Around the same time, the Japanese were producing scenes of nature. In China, cloisonné has been used since the 13th century AD. Make 1-2 pieces. $5 tool deposit. All materials and supplies included. $75. Information: Liz Simmons, 585-243-6785, liz@gvcaonline.org

We happily welcome back Kelly’s Old Timers, now counting 60+ years of performing, along with the Geneseo String Band. We continue our co-sponsorship with York Central School to host the event, which will take place in the “old” gymnasium at York Central School, Route 63, Greigsville NY (look for the yellow doors).
Eric Kelly, music teacher at York, tells us that many a square dance was held in the gym in years past, when his uncle Woody Kelly and father Roger first started Kelly’s Old Timers in Perry in the 1950’s. Eric and cousin Doug Kelly will be calling the dances, backed up by Roger Kelly, Guy Macaluso and Tom Kwiecien. Kelly’s will be joined by members of the Geneseo String Band, led by Jim Kimball of SUNY Geneseo.
If you’ve never been to a square dance, you can come early at 7:15 p.m. and learn the basic steps. No special clothing or prior knowledge is required—beyond knowing one’s left from one’s right! The dance is truly a fun evening for all ages, and a great opportunity to enjoy a longtime local tradition. Refreshments will be available. Admission is $5 Adults; $3 Spectators, 18 & under free.

True to his radio form, humorist celebrity speaker Garrison Keillor shares hilarious anecdotes about growing up in the American Midwest, the people of Lake Wobegon, and "late-life fatherhood." With a wonderful, dry sense of humor, he captivates audiences and delivers with class, charisma, and wisdom. The most significant point is that this is not like ‘A Prairie Home Companion’, his widely popular radio show. This is a nice night of casual storytelling, Keillor-style. Bid high and don't miss one of the most popular American storytellers of all time.
