Mission Statement
The mission of the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts is to enrich the quality of life in
Livingston
County by encouraging and promoting the arts and cultural activities through support of artists, schools and community groups.
Brief History/Highlights/Supporters
The Genesee Valley Council on the Arts has served Livingston County for 43 years as of 2010. A not-for-profit corporation, the Council is dedicated to the development and promotion of the arts and culture in this beautiful region of western New York.
GVCA supports an array of programs and services for artists, arts and cultural organizations, students and the community at large. Primarily an arts service organization with offices on the Livingston County Campus in Mt. Morris, the arts council forms partnerships with businesses, schools, SUNY Geneseo, libraries, historical societies and other organizations and individuals to serve local artists and audiences. Our programs include an annual members exhibit at the Bertha V.B. Lederer Gallery at SUNY Geneseo, artists' residencies in the schools, traditional arts presentations at various sites around the county, an annual high school student art exhibit, Community Arts Grants for arts and cultural projects, Individual Artists Grants, and Grants for Young Artists which support high school juniors' and seniors' study in the arts. In addition, GVCA maintains an extensive registry of local artists, provides information and assistance, and publishes
ArtSphere, a quarterly newsletter containing the county's most comprehensive arts and cultural calendar.
The Genesee Valley Council on the Arts was incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation in 1971 and designated Livingston County's official arts organization in 1974.
Through the generosity of Livingston County, in 2008, GVCA expanded its current location, adding the New Deal Gallery and Apartment One Gallery in the Livingston Arts Center. Arts, culture, and movement classes and programming are held at Livingston Arts Center. Visit our sister website, www.livingstonartscenter.org to learn more and view class listings.
