Traditional Arts Program

The Traditional Arts Program at the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts supports our area's living cultural heritage through documentation and public programming of traditional arts. Traditional or folk arts are the ways a group maintains and passes on its shared way of life. They are usually learned informally, yet remain important expressions of a community's sense of beauty, identity and values. They range from verbal "lore" like local ghost stories, children's rhymes or family sayings, to material arts like woodcarving, quilting or fly tying, to performance arts like fiddling, break dancing, or square dance calling. Your family, your church, your neighborhood – these are all groups that practice and maintain creative traditions that give meaning to everyday life.

Since the early 1990s our program has hosted a Traditional Music Series, a variety of events throughout the year. Our annual Round and Square Dance in the spring brings dancers from far and near, supporting a long tradition here of live music and eastern-style square dancing. Our Old Time music concerts have featured music of Irish, Italian, Polish, German, and Macedonian origins, accompanied by fiddles, accordions, banjos, mandolins and other instruments both familiar and uncommon. Further highlights of our programs and activities developed over the last decade include: Hispanic holiday and life traditions, such as Three Kings Day celebrations and Quinceanera arts Occupational folklife and folklore of the Retsof Salt Mine and former mining community of Little Italy Traditional dance from around the world in workshops, school residencies, and performances Accordion Fest, featuring musicians and instruments from diverse ethnic and regional traditions Workshops and apprenticeships in traditional music In 2010 we continue with our annual Round and Square Dance on May 1 at York Central School (see calendar listing for more detailed information). We are happy to present the needlework and artistry of Ellen Strivings this spring in our Apartment One gallery at the Livingston Arts Center. Ellen is a native of Norway, and specializes in Norwegian knitting. Her skills also extend to rug hooking, quilting, embroidery, tatting and painting. An additional focus this year is an update of information on traditional arts and artists in our region. We will benefit from an internship program sponsored by the New York State Council on the Arts’ Folk Arts Program. Lesley Ham, a graduate student from the Folklore and Ethnomusicology department at Indiana University, will assist us this summer with searching out and meeting with traditional artists of the Genesee region. Let us know if you’re interested in hearing more.

The program is administered by Karen Canning, and also enjoys the expertise of SUNY Geneseo ethnomusicologist, James Kimball. Ms. Canning may be reached through the arts council office, or may be e-mailed at karen@gvcaonline.org. Our programs are supported largely by a grant from the Folk Arts Program of the New York State Council on the Arts, and GVCA Members.

Annual Dinner

GVCA Annual business meeting to be tasting event at the Yard of Ale October 15

This year's annual meeting will be held at the Yard of Ale in Piffard. Instead of a traditional sit-down meal, the dinner committee is planning a wine, specialty water, and food pairing event that will allow more opportunity for people to mingle and linger. "We wanted to try something new and Brian, the chef at the Yard of Ale, is a true artist. The dinner may be called a tasting, but no one will leave hungry," notes dinner chair Anne Lutkus.

The business portion of the meeting will take place at 7:30 pm and the public is welcome to attend. At the annual meeting, new board members will take office, we will thank our outgoing board members and we will present the GVCA Arts Leadership Awards. (See related article.)

Arts Leadership Awards

The Genesee Valley Council on the Arts established its Arts Leadership Awards in 1998 to honor the exceptionally talented, hardworking and generous people who make Livingston County so rich in arts and culture. Each year, the Board of Directors selects a committee of its current members who determine the categories and criteria for which awards will be given, solicits nominations from GVCA members, constituents and the general public, and selects the awardees. Awards are presented at GVCA's Annual Dinner.

Generally the nominations deadline is in mid-July. Download your nomination form and send it to GVCA today.

Grants Awards Reception

At the beginning of each year the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts brings together all of the artists and organizations that were awarded funding through our regrant programs. This includes Community Arts Grant awardees, Individual Artist grantees, and recipients of the Dick Smith Young Artists Grants. We also invite our state legislators, who are directly responsible for the state funds that support these programs, GVCA board members and local government officials who are very supportive of our work in the community.

For the past several years, the ceremony was held in the Supervisors Meeting Room of the Livingston County Government Center in Geneseo.

All-County Student Art Exhibit

The All-County Student Art Exhibit is a show for high school art students. Art teachers are invited to bring 40 pieces of student art work to the SUNY Geneseo MacVittie College Union Ballroom. There it is judged by college art faculty and retired high school art teachers. Works that receive Best of Show and First Place are exhibited in the Bertha V.B. Lederer Gallery.

The day long exhibit in the ballroom is also a networking opportunity for the art teachers and art students in the area.

The exhibit is sponsored by the SUNY Geneseo Student Art Association, KeyBank and the members of the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts.

Elementary Student Art Exhibit

GVCA’s first Student Art Show specifically for area children in grades K-8 was held May 21, 2005 at Mount Morris Central School. Oaks in our Valley was developed in conjunction with the Genesee Valley Conservancy events that celebrated the organization’s fifteenth anniversary in 2005. This was an opportunity for young artists to explore the wonderful oaks in our region, whether producing a landscape, woodcut, carving, or piece of furniture or cabinetry. Two- and three-dimensional work was displayed, either via students’ art teachers or from the student directly. All students received a ribbon for entering work in the show.

Artists of the Genesee Valley Studio Tour

The GVCA has sponsored five Studio Tours. This is an opportunity for the public to view area artisans’ work, observe artists working at their craft, and purchase artwork directly from the artists. Most of the participating artists have year-round studio hours, which can be confirmed by calling or emailing the artists directly.

Maps for this free, self-guided tour encompassing several communities in beautiful Livingston County are mailed to GVCA members and the Studio Tour guest list.

This event was not held last year but we hope that renewed interest in the tour will revive it in the future.

Artful Experiences

GVCA is partnering with the Greater Rochester Alzheimer Association's and Noyes Hospital in Dansville to create a monthly program starting in April called Afternoons at the Art Center. Alzheimer's sufferers and their caregivers are treated to a special afternoon each month where they have the galleries at Livingston Art Center all to themselves. This program came about when the creative and energetic Dale Sells from Noyes called our offices with the idea of modeling a program on the highly successful program at the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery ( modeled on Meet Me At MoMA at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City). We are very glad she did, and we are excited to offer this wonderful program to our community.

The program will provide a day of stimulation through meaningful conversation by the individual with dementia and their care partner. Those with dementia will engage with trained docents to share memories triggered by the paintings as well as thoughts and feelings the paintings bring forth. (We may also give them a chance with one of our art class teachers to express themselves through the creation of art).

Please let us know soon if you are interested in volunteering or attending this wonderful program. Call or email Chris Norton at 243-6785 or chris@gvcaonline.org.
