Individual Artist Grants
Three grants of $2,000 each were available to artists interested in creating new work within a community context in 2005. These competitive grants are based on the artistic merit of work samples, a strong interface between the community and the creative process, and a clearly defined project. They were created by the New York State Council on the Arts to further meet the needs of artists in our state.
Recipients for 2005 projects included Dan Folts, Jean Guthrie and Julia Stewart. Dan is a poet whose work focuses on the intersections of nature and culture. He’s working on a long poem that synthesizes natural history information, human and environmental history of the Genesee Valley bioregion, and the Seneca language. Jean Guthrie will explore the influence of place on identity in a series of artists books. Julia Stewart will use the Oaks of the Genesee Valley as inspiration for paintings that are reminiscent of icons, combining ancient Celtic beliefs with Julia’s own sense of spirituality.
GVCA administers the Individual Artist Grants program and anticipates funding for these grants in 2006. The application deadline for 2006 grants is October 17, 2005.
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, have resided in Livingston County for at least six months before the application deadline, and not be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program. They must attend a Community Arts Grant seminar or consult with the program coordinator before applying.
